Federer wins his fourth consecutive U.S. Open title

Last Sunday, Roger Federer obtained his fourth consecutive U.S. Open championship and 12th Grand Slam title overall by defeating Novak Djokovic with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 score. He becomes the first tennis player of the Open Era to win the American Grand Slam four years in a row since Bill Tilder in 1920.

26-year-old Federer is getting close to Pete Sampras who career titles summed up 14 major grand slams. "I think about it a lot now," Federer said of Sampras' mark. "To come so close at my age is fantastic, and I hope to break it." Federer hopes to win more titles than Sampras. Federer is the only man from 1970 to 2005, to win all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year.

Being this his first Slam final, Djokovic managed to lead 6-5 the opening two sets but Federer undid it by showing why he has held the No. 1 ranking for the past 188 weeks, the longest run ever. "Once again, he showed he's the best." Djokovic said of Federer.

After the game Federer stated that he enjoyed getting another shot at Djokovic and the challenge against new guys, beating them in the finals, is his biggest motivation.

With this Grand Slam-record title, Federer won $2.4 million in prize money: $1.4 million for winning the tournament and a $1 million bonus as he finished atop the U.S. Open Series standings based on performances on hard-court tune-up events.
