Berdych wins in Germany
By Alfred Johnson
The Czech tennis player, Tomas Berdych won the second round of the Gerry Weber Open with a 6-4, 7-8 (7-3) on Monday, spoiling Nicolas Kiefer’s return to the sport.
The fourth-seeded Berdych, who lost to Roger Federer in last year's final, hit his ninth ace to end the match against Kiefer, the 1999 German Champion that hadn't played since last year's French Open due to a wrist injury.
"There were a few tears in my eyes. I've been waiting for this moment a long time," Kiefer said. "I could have wished for an easier opponent in my comeback, but the main thing is I'm on the court pain-free."
On Monday, the four-time winner at Halle, Roger Federer, pulled out of the event stating exhaustion and an adductor problem following his French Open loss to Rafael Nadal on Sunday.
"In an attempt to prevent injury after the long final in Paris, I cannot defend my title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle," Federer said in a brief statement on his web site.
German Benjamin Becker beat Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and Robin Soderling of Sweden defeated Stefan Koubek of Austria 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. Also, eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus advanced to the second round, beating Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 6-3.
