Paddock was named new Senators’ Coach

John Paddock will not have to go far away when he takes his new position as Ottawa Senators Coach after two seasons as the team’s assistant coach. Last Friday, the 53-year-old was promoted to take the position that he had long pursued.

"John is known and respected by our players and that was a big reason in his being named head coach," general manager Bryan Murray said. "I never considered John as an assistant coach. I considered him a partner."

From 1991 to 1995 Paddock coached the Winnipeg Jets becoming the first Manitoba-born trainer of the franchise. Later on he added the general manager position and concluded it in the early stage of the year 1994.

Paddock has been also an assistant GM with Philadelphia and director of pro scouting with the New York Rangers.

Paddock talked to Senators players before deciding to take the job. "It's an extremely exciting time when you become a head coach in the National Hockey League again," Paddock said. "I don't look at it as a difficult transition. This hockey team has been successful and has the same solid core of players. We're not looking to reinvent the wheel by any means, we're just looking to continue and have a successful season."

Whilst he hoped to one-day return to the NHL as Head Coach, it wasn't a goal that consumed him, but now he is very proud and happy of his work.
