Barbaro undefeated winner in Kentucky Derby
By Alfred Johnson
Barbaro covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.36 and became the sixth undefeated horse to win the Derby. Back in 2004 Smarty Jones was the last undefeated winner.
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was eating grass outside his barn at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning and is currently being pointed as a strong prospective to the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 20th.
Barbaro appears to have come out of the Derby in good shape. This amazing stallion became the first horse since Needles in 1956 to win the Kentucky Derby after a five-week layoff. Barbaro was coming off a win in the Florida Derby on April 1st.
Barbaro’s trainer is Michael Matz. Matz became the fourth consecutive trainer to win with his first Derby starter. Barbaro's next challenge will come in the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes where Barbaro will be able to display his major strengths as a champion.
