Lions get boxed out in opener
By David Ostrowsky
NEWTON -- While the bus schedule may have not been aligned for Brockton Friday night, at least the stars were.
Despite arriving a mere two minutes before game time due to bus problems, the Boxers stormed back from a late, Game 1 deficit to take the 3-0 sweep over Newton South in a Division 1 South preliminary.
"We were really at a disadvantage, got there two minutes before the game started. We tried to not let it affect us," Boxer coach Jack Olson remarked.
The early returns proved otherwise. The No. 8 seed Lions were two points away from winning Game 1 thanks to an august 13 kills, six of which belonged to Wesley Ancheta. But Brockton quickly tied things up before eventually taking the 28-26 decision.
In round 2, Brockton raced out to an early lead, and despite South holding an ephemeral lead, was in control throughout. South made it interesting toward the end, but finished at the short end of a 25-21 decision. The culprit of South’s Game 2 demise: look no further than five serving errors.
Unforced errors was unfortunately a constant theme for the Lions Friday night.
"We had a lot of balls that we were touching that were going out of bounds," Lion head coach Todd Elwell confessed.
In Game 3, the Lions’ improved serving was not enough to compensate for registering a paltry four kills.
"They were blocking really well. They adjusted to us as we went on. Initially we had them then they made some adjustments," Elwell said minutes following his team’s 3-0 loss.
A year ago, South lost to Brookline by the same score in the preliminary round of the MIAA tourney.
While South’s four departing seniors have spiked their last volleyball at the Newton South fieldhouse, not all were hanging their heads after this tough L.
"It’s been a great season, everybody stepped up this year," senior Inn Seol said.
The ninth-seeded Boxers plays Catholic Memorial next in the South quarterfinals.
"We’re young, we wanna play everyone," Olson exclaimed.
