David Wells lights up in his Dodgers debut

By Alfred Johnson

On Sunday night, Wells excelled in his Dodgers debut pitching five effective innings and saved the finale of the three-game series, defeating the New York Mets with a final score 6-2. "It was good to see him back out there, helping us win a game," Dodgers manager Grady Little said.

Juan Pierre and Matt Kemp did four hits and four RBI for the Dodgers; each one had tow, and pulled within 3 1/2 games of wild card-leading San Diego. Rafael Furcal also went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

In his first game in 20 days, after San Diego cut him earlier in August, Wells (6-8) has achieved seven hits and tow runs. Since the Dodgers moved to the West Coast, Wells is the oldest pitcher to start for the team.

Due to three starters injuries, Wells was called by the Dodgers to give him a chance and sign to a prorated deal on Friday.

Rudy Seanez, Joe Beimel, Jonathan Broxton and Takashi Saito combined to pitch the final four innings for the Dodgers. Wells managed to improve to 2-0 against the Mets this season and 6-1 with a 2.83 ERA in nine career starts.
